イルカは一度も泳ぐのをやめず息継ぎもきちんとしながら常に泳ぎ続けている事から、かつてはイルカは全く眠らないのではないかと言われていた。しかし、イルカは右の脳と左の脳を交互に眠らせる事ができる特殊な能力があることが分かってきており、眠らないという説は現在ではあまり有力ではない。目をつむってから息をするまでの約一分間×300回～400回が一日の睡眠時間であり、一定方向に回転しながら眠ることが知られている。この回転方向は北半球のイルカは反時計回り、南半球のイルカは時計回りに回ると報告されている。ちなみに、右の脳が眠っている時は反対の左目を、逆に左の脳が眠っているときは右目をつむりながら泳ぐ。
