　かつてケニアのコーヒーの産地にある村を訪れたとき、不思議なことに女の子が非常に少ないことがありました。村の人は次のように説明しました。

「数年前に、欧米のNGOがやってきてプランテーションから子供を一掃したんだ。そのせいで、子供は地元で働けなくなってしまった。それで仕方なく、他の町に家政婦として出稼ぎにいくことになった。それで若い女の子が減ってしまったんだよ」

　若い女の子が都会へ家政婦として働きにいくといえば聞こえはいいかもしれません。しかし実態は、その何割かは売春の道に進まされます。つまり、プランテーションでの仕事が奪われたことで、より過酷な児童労働にさらされてしまっているのです。
